Microblink launched its new app called PhotoMath that solves Math equations using a phone's camera at TechCrunch Disrupt Europe 2014 in London.

MicroBlink, a startup text recognition technology company, developed the PhotoMath app that can solve arithmetic expressions and simple linear equations simply by "scanning" the problems in a textbook or on the computer screen.

According to the company's co-founder and CEO Damir Sabol, MicroBlink is not an educational company. The tech firm is promoting their "machine vision technology with PhotoMath."

For the past two years, the start-up has been developing a powerful engine for mobile phone cameras. MicroBlink is in the business of "selling its core technology to companies who might find it useful," said tech website TechCrunch.

With PhotoMath, smartphone users can point their mobile devices towards a math problem then the app will examine it using the phone's camera.

The app, which only supports arithmetic expressions, fractions and decimals, powers and roots and simple linear equations, will provide a solution immediately and will also give a step-by-step guide to "show how its works," explaining how the equation can be solved.

The PhotoMath team plans to include support for more-advanced math equations in the future.

PhotoMath, however, only works with printed text and doesn't support hand-written math problems.

The PhotoMath app is now available for iOS and Windows phones and is expected to release on Android devices in 2015.
