Infant Born with Four Arms, Four Legs

A newly-born baby boy caused quite a stir in Guangzhou, Guangdong province last week, not because he was a celebrity couple's son but because he was born with four arms and four legs.
Doctors in Guangzhou said the beautiful baby boy was born joined to a headless parasitic twin, which joined him at the torso at birth on 2 April.

The parents of the infant were even more surprised because they said they have been regulatory visiting clinics and small hospitals during pregnancy for pre-natal examinations.
Routine Exams Didn't Notice Abnormality
"We were diligent in going to clinics for checkups during my wife's pregnancy and all of the routine examinations revealed nothing abnormal," the boy's father, surnamed Chen, told local reporters.
Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center chief surgeon Yu Jiakang said the two were supposed to be twins but the other one did not completely develop and became deformed.
On 11 April, doctors in Guangzhou, Guangdong province successfully removed the extra limbs and the boy is now in stable condition following the surgery.
Boy Diagnosed with Pneumonia, Heart Illness
However, doctors are monitoring the infant because was diagnosed pneumonia and heart disease prior to the operation.
"I hope my son will survive this trial and grow up to be a healthy and normal boy," said Chen.
The conjoined twins weighed just over three kilos before the surgery, with the underdeveloped fetus weighing 600 grams, doctors said.
