Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova has advanced to the semifinals after she defeated French Open winner Maria Sharapova in straight sets 6-3 6-2 at the WTA Finals in Singapore on Friday.
After losing to Sharapova at the finals of the recent China Open in Beijing in a hard fought three-setter, Kvitova redeemed herself as she disposed the 27-year-old Russian in their second round-robin match.

Sharapova got an early lead as Kvitova looked out of it, still thinking about her first day loss against Agnieszka Radwanska, but got back in form as she exchanged breaks mid-way in the first set.
The Wuhan Open champion Kvitova found her rhythm and continued to surge past the Russian and took the set.
That's all the boost that Kvitova needs as she continued her momentum into the second set, breaking Sharapova three times to enjoy her first victory in six outing against the two-time tournament runner-up.
"After the first loss here, I didn't really feel well and I'm just glad to win my second match and still have a chance of being in the semifinals," Kvitova said. "I think when we played the final in Beijing I found the confidence to play against her again."
The Connecticut champion Kvitova is now tied with Radwanska with a win and a loss record in Group White with Caroline Wozniacki already into the semifinals after she defeated the Rogers Cup champion in an early match while Sharapova dropped to last place with a winless record.
All three players still has a fighting chance to qualify in the knockout rounds.
Kvitova will qualify if she wins her match against Wozniacki and hopes that Radwanska loses her match against Sharapova.
Radwanska will reach the semis if she defeats Sharapova and Wozniacki maintains a perfect record.
Sharapova has little hope in qualifying but she still has an outside chance if she wins against Radwanska and limits the Pole's winning games, and Kvitova loses her match.
That's all for us to find out as the matches continue on Friday at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
