Bio Bay Spectacle Appears in Dalian China

The great Blackstone coast in Liaoning, Dalian recently appeared as a large area of bioluminescent bay that drew many residents and university students who wanted to see the rare spectacular view.

The great Blackstone coast shone a natural blue light that made it look like a vast star-studded night sky.

According to the Dalian Evening News on Sunday, there are two kinds of shining light in a bio bay phenomenon. One is a continuous flashing green light, and the other is an area of blue light.

The blue light is more beautiful but does not keep flashing; it will only appear when you throw stones into the sea.

"The bio bay was much prettier and covered a larger area a few days ago, actually," said Wang, a student at a university near the great Blackstone coast.

"A few days ago, the blue light rushed to the coast with sea wave," added Wang, who continuously visited the "star coast" for three days.

More and more people visited in recent days, but the blue light seemed to shy away from the attention and gradually vanished.

Bio bay appears in Puerto Rico, Australia, and Maldives and attracts a large number of visitors.

The "bio bay" phenomenon is caused by microscopic planktons such as Pyrodinium Bahamense that are capable of producing natural light, explained Wang Bing from the Ocean Technology and Environment School of Dalian Ocean University.

"The microscopic planktons which can produce natural light will glow in an appropriate environment. It is necessary to collect seawater samples and analyse them in a laboratory to confirm which kinds of microscopic planktons glow in the sea," said Bing.

Bing said a bio bay spectacle rarely occurs in the Dalian area, adding that its recent occurrence may have been caused by some special nutrient contents in the seawater.
