The President of the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) of America, Ted Bishop, was removed from office last Friday due to a sexist Tweet and Facebook post directed at professional golfer Ian Poulter.

Poulter had recently written a book where he made certain remarks about the Ryder Cup captaincy of Nick Faldo for the European team in 2008, and of USA captain Tom Watson this year.

Bishop did not like what Poulter wrote to say the least and expressed his feelings on social media.

When comparing Poulter's achievements to World Golf Hall of Famer Faldo's - a multiple tour and major championship winner - he referred to him as "Lil Girl" on Twitter.

On Facebook, Bishop had noted that Watson and Faldo were getting "bashed" by Poulter. He said that it sounded like a little school girl squealing during recess.

Afterwards, the PGA of America Board had voted to remove him last Friday. Bishop will not be invited to any future PGA Championships or Ryder Cups. All other courtesies extended to past presidents will also be rebuked.

Bishop, with only one month left on his term, is the first PGA President to be fired. He had initially apologized to Poulter and anyone else he may have offended.

His fellow PGA officers asked him to resign on Friday, but Bishop wanted things to pass through their due process.

Instead, he went to the board to apologize and explain his actions, after which they voted to impeach him.

"That is the due process and I respect that, as painful as it might be," Bishop said.

When asked the reason of his removal, the board commented that Bishop's remarks were inconsistent with the association's policies.

PGA Chief Executive Pete Bevacqua said in a statement, "We must demand of ourselves that we make golf both welcoming and inclusive to all who want to experience it, and everyone at the PGA of America must lead by example."
