According to police, the suspect barricaded himself in while his companion, Jannelle Monroy, remained in the carjacked vehicle hours before the police took them both to custody. Monroy's relationship to the assailant is yet to be established as of this writing.
In the morning of October 24, Sacramento Country Sheriff Deputy Danny Oliver approached a man and a woman aboard a parked car outside Motel 6 for suspicious activity. Marquez immediately fired multiple shots using an assault rifle at 10:27 AM local time.
Forty-seven-year-old Oliver, a father of two, sustained a fatal wound on the forehead. The other victim was Placer County Sheriff's Det. Michael David Davis Jr, who is also given dedication similar to his deceased father who died on duty 26 years ago.
After assaulting two police officers, Marquez drove nine minutes out of Carmichael County trying to carjack a motorist but failed. The unnamed victim sustained head injuries but is now in stable condition following a surgery, said Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones.
Afterwards, Marquez headed toward another neighborhood where he carjacked a Ford Mustang owned by Jose Cruz, reported LA Times. According to Cruz, Marquez pleaded to get away as soon as possible because the police were after him.
Marquez then turned toward an Auburn house, where authorities were forced to spray teargas to get him. Immediately after the carjacking incidents, the California Highway Patrol issued a Blue Alert in surveillance of the stolen car.
In the course of the police chase, all schools in Auburn Union School District were ordered on total lockdown and a high school football game was suspended. Placer County Sheriff spokesperson Dena Erwin said they are looking into the motive behind Marquez's dangerous act.
