Chilling Progress on Search for Missing Oklahoma Teen

The body of 19-year-old Dustin Self from Oklahoma, who went missing last year in his pursuit to survive the wild, may have already been found. The remains discovered by a deer hunter on October 7 are now under the custody of the State Medical Examiner's Office for identification.

The unnamed hunter found the skeletal remains on the north end of Steens Mountain in Oregon, not far from where Self's truck and backpack were found in April 2013. Personal identification--driver's license, credit card and a key chain--indicated a positive match.

The State Medical Examiner's Office says it may take a week or more before they could arrive at a conclusion.

The last his family and friends heard of Self was through a call he made to his girlfriend a month before searches for the missing teen were conducted, saying his GPS had led him onto a different road. Final sightings of Self were recorded from the nearby town of Fields. A storekeeper claimed to have seen him sleeping inside his truck.

According to his family, city-bred Self had watched the movie "Into the Wild" before he left his family. Next thing they knew, he was off on a quest to the wilderness.

The Sean Penn-directed film was inspired by the true-to-life story of Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch). He was an American adventurer best known for his Alaskan odyssey, which ultimately ended his life. In 1992, McCandless' body was found inside his sleeping bag by a local hunter named Butch Killian - a stark similarity to Self's case.
