In an effort to lessen the country's dependence on foreign technology, China has developed its first homemade server through local tech enterprise Dawning Information Industry.
Dawning, known in China as Sugon, has developed a series of four servers using the 3B processor of another homegrown name, Longsoon Technology. Longsoon's Godson-3B1500 is China's answer to Intel, AMD and other chip makers.

State news Xinhua quotes Dawning Vice President Sha Chaoqun, saying: "Servers are crucial applications in a country's politics, economy, and information security. We must fully master all these technologies."
Dawning declined to reveal more about the server citing "propriety intellectual property rights" and the involvement of Chinese government organizations.
This venture takes China a step closer to President Xi Jinping's goal to turn China into an "Internet power". More government-backed work is underway, to include local mobile operating systems and more super computers.
Despite drawing criticism for the government's strong cyber policing, Xi asserts that it is a vital element of national security.
"Without cybersecurity there is no national security, without information technology there is no modernization," PC World quotes Xi in March.
The Chinese government is known for exercising extreme censorship over Internet access. Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter are still inaccessible within China's borders, as well as other sites deemed to hurt government agenda.
Even foreign IT companies are expected to jump through hoops if they hope to sell their products in China. In fact, new regulations to ferret "secret spying and surveillance activities" were announced mid-2014.
