Top seeded Roger Federer escaped a threat from Croatian Ivo Karlovic and has eyed a sixth title against seventh seeded David Goffin at the Swiss Indoors in Basel on Saturday.
The first set was the most intense as both players held their serves and saved every break point they are faced with to force the set into a tie-break where the Swiss edged out Karlovic 10-8.

The hard-hitting Karlovic was hot in the second set as he connected 13 service aces and broke the five-time former champion once to even out the match.
The 17-time Grand Slam champion came back in the third and deciding set as he won 100 percent of his first serves and broke the Croatian once to finish the set and the match 7(10)-6(8) 3-6 6-3 that lasted an hour and 33 minutes.
Federer, 33, is also eyeing to dethrone World No. 1 Novak Djokovic who is 690 points ahead of him. If he wins the tournament, he will get 500 points and have a shot in next week's BNP Paribas Masters in Paris where the winner will receive 1,000 points.
But before that has to contend with Belgian star David Goffin who had a shootout against Croatian wild card entry Borna Coric in the other semis match.
Goffin came out hot against the 17-year-old in the first set as he nailed three service aces and broke Coric once to take the set but the teenager came back in the second set as he delivered six aces and broke back the Belgian once to level the match.
In the third and deciding set, Coric had a chance to break Goffin bu the 23-year-old Croatian was able to save his service game and followed up with a break to finish the match and reach in his first Tour 500 finals 6-4 3-6 6-3 that lasted two hours and six minutes.
"I'm really happy today, but it was a tough match," Goffin said. "I'm really tired and it was tough to focus today. I made a lot of mistakes on easy balls, but I'm really happy to win today."
