Greener Apple: Free Recycling of Old Apple Products Offered

Apple is turning green again and wants its customers to do the same by bringing their old devices to its stores and data centers for free recycling.

The move reinforces the tech company's commitment to reduce environmental damage caused by its products.

On a new section of its website which was added Monday, the company unveiled steps that it would take toward becoming a greener Apple.

It said it would strive to rely more on alternative power, and lessen the number of electronic junk sent to garbage landfills.

To do that, Apple instructed its stores worldwide to accept old iphones, ipods, ipads, Mac computers and other Apple products for recycling.

Apple stores have previously been giving away gift cards in exchange for old products that can still be resold. 

Those that have no resale value can not be traded for gift cards but Apple will handle their proper disposal for free.

Apple has sold over one billion mobile devices and computers in the last seven years.

Data from the environment watchdog Greenpeace showed that in 2012, two percent of harmful emissions came from technology products.

Apple's initiative to turn greener was came in time for the annual Earth Day celebration on Tuesday, April 22.

Already, the tech company has been cited by Greenpeace as a leader in environmental awareness initiatives, topping 19 other technology companies it has reviewed.

Apple's four data centers in the United States rely solely on alternative energy sources, including wind, hydro, biogas, and solar power.

Its offices worldwide are also 94 percent powered by renewable energy.

Apple executives said they intend to constantly look for solutions rather than add to the environmental problems already besetting the world.
