8 LA Firefighters Injured in 'Death Trap' Blaze

Eight firefighters were reported to have been injured in Los Angeles after containing a structure fire on Sunday in a storage facility holding highly combustible materials without any sprinkler system, reports state.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, eight out of 365 firefighters suffered from burns and heat exhaustion after they were deployed to battle the fire at a storage facility in the 600 block of Venice Boulevard in Los Angeles at around 7:30 on Sunday evening.

The 80,874 square-foot two-story Extra Space Storage structure was built like "a mouse maze" and apparently lacked a sprinkler system which should have helped ease the rapid spread of the fire throughout the materials inside the building which included artwork, furniture, and vinyl records.

Los Angeles City Council member Mike Bonin described the building as a "death trap" with its difficult layout.

"Smoke filled the narrow corridors. Water on the ground was boiling. Firefighters needed to rotate in and out in teams to endure the brutal conditions," Bonin stated.

While five of the injured firefighters were already released from the hospital after being treated for minor burns and heat exhaustion, two others suffered more severe burns, while yet another had complained about back problems before he was sent for treatment.

According to reports, all of the eight injured firefighters are expected to make full recovery soon.

The building, however, was not as lucky as one-third of the storage facility suffered significant damage during the operations that lasted for over 14 hours.

On the other hand, the other two-thirds of the building were salvaged despite the challenging scenario the LAFD encountered.

Investigations as to the cause of the fire are underway. No other structures were reported damaged during the blaze.
