Google Thinking of Fusing the Android and Chrome OS

The two teams in charge of the Chrome OS software and the Android mobile device operating system are currently working together more closely than they had previously, hinting at a possible merger of the OSes, according to Brian Rakowski, Google's vice president of product management for Android.

Although the teams have been toiling more closely, Rakowski said there will be no major changes in the two systems as of the moment.

"There's no plans to change the way the products work," said Rakowski.

Chrome and Android, which are both under Sundar Pichai, the company's senior vice president, are important Google entities, according to CNET's Richard Nieva.

Google CEO and co-founder Larry Page has called Android "the future" of the company in his Ted speech earlier in March despite the majority of the firm's income coming from advertising, which is a $50 billion-a-year business, and search.

Page's interest in the mobile operating system seems justified since Android has become the most widely used  operating system around the globe, with 80 percent of the world's smartphones running on it.

Chrome OS, on the other hand, is a separate piece of software developed to power light weight computers. It has a smaller presence than Android. Although it's been popular among educators, it holds only 2 percent of the world's computer systems, said CNET.

The fusion of Chrome OS and Android will represent an unsurprising and significant shift for the company that created both platforms.

Meanwhile, Google's Android department has been busy since Google unveiled the latest devices in its Nexus line, the 8.9-inch Nexus 9 tablet and the Nexus 6 smartphone. Both devices showcase Google's latest version of Android, Android 5.0 Lollipop.
