Benedict Cumberbatch Slated to Play Doctor Strange

(Photo : Reuters) Benedict Cumberbatch was not in attendance at the BAFTA TV Awards ceremony as he is reportedly took care of his pregnant wife Sophie Hunter.

Marvel has finally found the right actor to play Doctor Strange. Deadline revealed that Benedict Cumberbatch seems to be the studio's pick for the superhero film. The actor's camp and Marvel's are set to negotiate already.

The news of Marvel's preference for Cumberbatch came after Joaquin Phoenix backed out from the project.

Jared Leto and Tom Hardy then surfaced as the possible actors until the studio decided Cumberbatch could be the man for the role.

Cumberbatch was recently praised for her Oscar-worthy performance as Alan Turing in The Imitation Game,  the biopic that Weinstein Co is slating for release November 21.

The actor has already scored an Emmy for portraying Sherlock Holmes on the BBC/PBS hit Sherlock.

Since Phoenix never signed a deal with Marvel, the studio was quick to launch a hunt for the right actor to play Doctor Strange.

The Marvel character Doctor Strange is a renowned neurosurgeon who eventually became the "Sorceror Supreme." The character is a numinous keeper who is charged of keeping the Earth safe against otherworldly threats. Stan Lee and Steve Ditko were the men behind Doctor Strange. It was first seen the Marvel comic book, Strange Tales, in the 1960s.

An animated, straight-to-DVD feature, Doctor Strange: The Sorcerer Supreme, was released in 2007.

Scott Derrickson will direct the motion picture. Jon Spaihts will write the script. The first draft was helmed by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer. The film is to be produced by Kevin Feige.

The Doctor Strange film is slated for screening in 2016.
