Hong Kong and Philippines Settle Dispute Over 2010 Manila Bus Hijacking

The Philippines and Hong Kong have agreed to resolve an ongoing dispute related to the 2010 bus hijacking in Manila in which 8 Hong Kong tourists were killed. Earlier this week, a delegation from the Philippines arrived in Hong Kong bringing with them a cheque for an undisclosed amount. This cheque will be given to the families of the hijacking victims as compensation for their losses.

The two governments making peace comes in the wake of a nearly four year grudge in which the Hong Kong government criticized Philippine officials for their slow response to the hijacking incident. Although Hong Kong has requested an apology from the Philippines on more than one occasion, the Philippine government refused but did express "its most sorrowful regret" to the victims and their families.
The diplomatic feud had reached its peak when the Hong Kong government threatened to level sanctions against diplomats and officials from the Philippines which would deny them fourteen day free visa entry into Hong Kong. However, the Philippine government has done its best to make peace and assure the Hong Kong government that measures are currently being taken to resolve the issue and to bring to justice those responsible for the incident.
