Domain Elite announced that it has poured $6.5 million into innovative endoscopy and colonoscopy device maker SMART Medical Systems. The venture capital group aims to help the company expand and meet the demand for its products in China.

Digital Journal cited Domain Elite founder Brian Halak saying:  "The mission of Domain Elite is to find the most effective medical technologies to fulfill important unmet medical needs and improve healthcare in China. In so doing, Domain will create unique investment opportunities in the rapidly growing Chinese market. SMART Medical Systems has an innovative and well-validated technology that we believe accomplishes both goals."

Part of the invested amount will go to the Hong Kong subsidiary of SMART Medical Systems. The funding will be used for the advancement of the firm's gastrointestinal (GI) medical device platform for cancer prevention and GI surgery. This mission will cover Greater China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

Cancer is now the leading cause of death in China, with colorectal cancer taking the second place among the most frequently occurring types of cancer. According to Hong Kong's Cancer Registry in 2013, the diagnosis of colorectal cancer has doubled compared to the previous decade. The registry also warned that it could become Hong Kong's leading cause of cancer death. Fortunately, the availability of screening technologies greatly increases the chances for survival.

SMART Medical Systems is a company that develops innovative medical devices designed to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of GI diseases, with a special focus on colorectal cancers. G-EYE, the firm's flagship product, is able to detect hidden pre-cancerous polyps using its innovative balloon technology. The product is now being sold in Europe through GI endoscopy firm Pentax Medical.
