After a disappointing early round exit in last week's Valencia Open 500, fifth seeded Tomas Berdych seeks to solidify his spot at the ATP World Tour Finals as he escaped a three set battle against French wild card entry Adrian Mannarino at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris on Tuesday.

The recent If Stockholm champion had to work hard for his spot at the prestigious season-ending event as he was forced to go three sets by Mannarino in the last Masters 1000 tournament of the year.

Berdych, 29, got a good start in the first set as the Czech took advantage of Mannarino's second serves and broke the 26-year-old Frenchman once in five attempts to take the set but wasn't going down without a fight as he forced Berdych into a tie-break in the second set and eventually edged out the 2005 former champion.

It was a battle of holding serves in the third set as both players exchanged breaks twice early in the decider but Berdych got more aggressive in the end as he broke Mannarino two more times to finish the set and the match 6-4 6(3)-7(7) 6-2 that lasted two hours and 21 minutes.

Berdych is currently in eighth place at the year-ending event, a mere 240 points ahead of fourth seeded David Ferrer and 265 points in front of 10th placer Milos Raonic. He stands of being eliminated if he doesn't reach the quarterfinals and both Ferrer and Raonic make it to the semifinals.

Next up for Berdych is the winner of the matchup between 12th seeded Feliciano Lopez of Spain and American qualifier Sam Querrey.

Other players who made in to the quarters are Spaniard Fernando Verdasco, who ousted 15th seed Gilles Simon of France in three sets 6-3 3-6 6-4, and 14th seeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa who won over Colombian Santiago Giraldo in two straight sets 6-4 7(10)-6(8).
