Ban on Olympic Champion Sun Yang Lifted

The Chinese national swimming team and the Zhejiang College of Sports have lifted the competition and endorsement ban imposed on London Olympic champion Sun Yang, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

Sun was banned from training, competing in commercial events, and endorsing projects after he was arrested and detained by the police for driving without a license in November of last year.

On 24 April, the national team and Zhejiang College announced that they have lifted all the ban, allowing Sun to train under former Chinese head coast Zhang Yadong. Sun's coach for 10 years, Zhu Shigen, had resigned due to health issues.

The college said the Chinese superstar swimmer was able to follow the regulations stipulated in the ban and had behaved well in the past month, prompting authorities to lift the ban and allow Sun to get back to competitions.

"We hope he will achieve good results in the scheduled National Championships in May and the Asian Games in September," said the deputy head of the Swimming Administrative Center in China, Shang Xiutang.

In the National Championships, Sun will compete in the 200m, 400m and 1,500m freestyle. Shang said Sun had incurred injuries after his systematic training was stopped due to the ban but he was hopeful that the swimmer will perform well in both the National Championships and the Asian Games, where he will compete against rival Park Tae-Hwan.

Analysts said it could be a different Sun that Chinese fans will witness when he gets back to competition because his 10-year coach resigned to undergo medical examinations. Sun will train under Zhang Yadong, the coach of former Olympic champion female swimmer Lou Xuejuan.

Sun was the first Chinese male to win a swimming gold in the Olympics. He won in the 400 and 1,500-meter freestyle at the London Games.
