Ferrer saved two break points and broke the Belgian once to routinely take the first set but the Swiss Indoor finalist got aggressive in the second set and broke the Spaniard twice to level the match at 1-all.

In the third set, both players exchanged breaks early but last year's runner-up took the match a step further as Ferrer broke Goffin two more times to win the set and the match 6-3 2-6 6-3 that lasted an hour and 46 minutes.

Ferrer has now setup an all-Spanish encounter against Fernando Verdasco in the third round who upset local favorite and Shanghai Rolex Masters finalist Gilles Simon in their own three set encounter 6-3 3-6 6-4.

Since exiting early at Shanghai, Nishikori is back on court and had to shake off some cobwebs against Tommy Robredo of Spain in his opening matchup.

The Malaysian Open champion dropped the first set as the Valencia Open 500 finalist went head-to-head and edged Nishikori out in the tie-break but the Japan Open winner found his rhythm in the second set and broke Robredo twice to even the score at one set each.

Nishikori continued his momentum into the deciding set as he broke the Spaniard once to finish Robredo off 6(4)-7(7) 6-2 6-3 in a match that lasted an hour and 56 minutes.

Next up for the Japanese, local star and 10th seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who also went three sets to dispose of Jurgen Melzer of Poland 6-2 4-6 6-2.

"I hope I'll be able to make it much more difficult for him," said Tsonga, when asked about his next match against Nishikori. "I don't know what exactly will happen, but I feel good. I played more than one hour and a half today, and it was a good thing, because I have some references I can rely on for tomorrow."
