While cable television is still the dominant force in entertainment, Internet TV Providers might soon get the jump start they need to become real competitors and threats.

A change of rules is being considered by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission. The change will put Internet TV providers on even terms with cable companies when it comes to regulations.

Internet TV stations will be able to make deals with these broadcasters to carry TV stations with the same capacity as cable and satellite companies. This change will assist Internet TV providers as they have been unable to get a license to get off the ground.

The FCC's aim is to extend their rules to Internet TV providers and do away with the old rules of Congress that were set in place to benefit satellite companies.

The rule change would cover all companies known as Multichannel Video Programming Distributors (MVPD) namely cable, satellite and Internet service providers.

FCC Chair Tom Wheeler said there should be no difference between cable, satellite and Internet providers, just as long as they offer the same service.

"The definition of an MVPD should turn on the services that a provider offers, not on how those services reach viewers," Wheeler wrote in a blog post recently.

"Twenty-first century consumers shouldn't be shackled to rules that only recognize 20th century technology."

While the rule change still needs to move through FCC proceedings, there seems to be no reason it shouldn't considering the lineup of current FCC commissioners.

Wheeler hopes companies will begin offering "channels a la carte" as the idea of spending so much on channels you don't need will not fly on the internet.
