Princess Salwa Aga Khan, the former American supermodel Kendra Spears, the wife of Prince Rahim Aga Khan, is expecting her first child.

Prince Rahim is the eldest son of Mawlana Hazar Imam - also known as His Highness Aga Khan IV.

Her pregnancy was announced by the Mawlana on the official website for Nizari Ismailism, which he heads.

The announcement read: "Expressing his greatest happiness, Mawlana Hazar Imam informed the Jamat today that Prince Rahim and Princess Salwa are expecting their first child. Around the world, Ismailis are gathering in Jamatkhanas to celebrate the happy news."

"Aitmadi Mahmoud Eboo, Chairman of the Ismaili Leaders' International Forum, has submitted a message of congratulations to Mawlana Hazar Imam and the entire Imamat family, and also conveyed warmest wishes to Prince Rahim and Princess Salwa on this very happy occasion," the message continued.

Spears, 25, was married to Prince Rahim in "a traditional Muslim ceremony," writes Vogue. Their marriage was a private ceremony, attended by the couple's family and close friends , at Château de Bellerive, which sits beside Lake Geneva, Switzerland.

Spears joined Ford Models and was launched at the New York Fashion Week in 2008. Her initial success made her popular among prestigious designers in Milan and Paris, including Gucci, Christian Lacroix, Lanvin, Hermès, and Valentino.

In 2009, Spears obtained a degree at University of Washington. She also modeled for Mario Testino, Calvin Klein shot by Alasdair McLellan, The Limited shot by Patrick Demarchelier, Etro, and Diane von Fürstenberg, and graced the covers of Vogue magazines in China, Japan, Germany, and Mexico, Elle, Allure, and Numero. She was also a subject in the advertisements for Calvin Klein, Diane von Fürstenberg, Peek & Cloppenburg, Etro, and The Limited.
