Mark Hamill also confirmed getting back his role as Jedi knight Luke Skywalker, while Carrie Fisher will continue to play the role of the beautiful rebel leader Princess Leia.

The announcement made by Lucasfilm immediately created an online frenzy as long-time Star Wars fans were surprised and ecstatic to learn that the three main characters will be played by the same actors they have loved in the trilogy.

Hamill confirmed his inclusion in the new Star Wars movie through his Twitter account.

Aside from the main characters being played by original Star Wars alumni, Chewbacca, C-3PO and R2-D2 will also be played by their previous actors - Peter Mayhew, Anthony Daniels and Kenny Baker, Lucasfilms announced.

New casts include Max von Sydow, an 80-plus veteran who has been playing villain roles in several films, Andy Serkis, Oscar Isaac, and Harry Potter's Bill Weasly Domhnall Gleeson. The roles of the four actors have not been revealed yet but sources said Sydow will surely be joining the dark side in the new Star Wars movie.

Also included in the movie are Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley and John Boyega.

The movie, which will bear the title "Star Wars: Episode VII", will begin filming next month and will mostly be shot in a studio in London.  The plot of the film has not been announced during the press conference on Wednesday.

Lucasfilms said the new Star Wars movie will be released on 18 December 2015.
