Black Friday: Walmart Places 20,000 Items on Sale

The end of Halloween festivities on Friday signals the start of the yearend holiday season for giant retailer Wal-Mart which would place over 20,000 items on sale.
Besides lower prices on a wide range of products from toys to food on Saturday, the grocer will also roll out again on Monday its holiday cyber savings promo in which shoppers would enjoy free delivery of 7 million products listed at Walmart.com.

The 24-hour event requires a total order of at least $50. The items covered in the sales promo is 1 million more than in 2013 when Walmart had 6 million goods on the free-delivery list.
The free-delivery promo seeks to match the offer made by competitor Target, which covers all items beginning late October through Dec. 20.
The Saturday price rollbacks - including the top 100 hottest gift items such as "Frozen" souvenirs to board games - is almost one month ahead of steep discounts the retailer offers for the Thanksgiving weekend and Cyber Monday.
The Saturday deals are no longer limited to online transactions since Walmart would allow shoppers to pick up the items ordered from Walmart.com at the store. Among the items that would likely be popular among online bargain hunters are the $199 40-inch Element TV, discounted by $100, and the $12 Crayola Paint Makers, one-third lower compared to its regular price of $18.88.
Walmart Executive Vice President Steve Bratspies told SeattlePI, "We're trying to offer the best deals when they want them."
Bratspies, also the retailer's general merchandising manager for its U.S. division, said that it would match prices from online rival Amazon.com, an improvement from past business strategies when it went head on only with local stores in terms of price cuts. Walmart tested the strategy in October at the Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Phoenix and Arkansas markets.
The sales blitz aims to reverse the weak retail market the store had experienced the past few years, causing its U.S. operations to register losses for six consecutive quarters.
