Static-X Vocalist Wayne Static dead at age 48

Wayne Static, the former vocalist of the California industrial metal band Static-X, has died at age 48, the group announced on their Facebook page.

The Michigan-born rocker's death, who became famous for his gravity-defying hair and "chintail" beard, was announced Saturday.

Details surrounding his death were not revealed, though. He is survived by wife Tera Wray.

"WAYNE STATIC was the enigmatic former frontman and namesake of Static-X, who later forged a successful solo career. Wayne was scheduled to co-headline tours with Powerman 5000 and Drowning Pool over the next several months," the groups' Facebook announcement said.

Fans and colleagues in the metal and rock genre, particularly Ozzy Osbourne, who seldom makes personal posts, aired his sadness with the lost of his dear friend.

"Very sad to hear of @IAmWayneStatic's passing," Osbourne tweeted.

"Spent a lot of time together on @TheOzzfest tours. A tragic loss. Love to his family/friends," he mentioned.

Osbourne and Static collaborated during the Ozzfest tours.

Static-X was Static's brainchild, founded in 1994. Their first album, Wisconsin Death Trip, debuted in 1999 and spawned hits, including "Push It."

Their second studio album, Machine, released in 2001, was the group's most successful album to date, reaching No. 11 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart. The next album, Shadow Zone, reached No. 20. With the release of their sixth and final studio album, Cult of Static, which reached No. 16,  Static decided to focus on his solo career.

Other performers also tweeted their sadness with Static's death.

Billy Corgan tweeted: "I am shocked to hear that Wayne Wells (Wayne Static) has passed away."

Corgan collaborated with Static in the latter's first band, Deep Blue Dream, in 1987/88.

Papa Roach's lead, Jacoby Shaddix, wrote a tribute for Static on his Instagram page: "RIP Wayne...this is so sad," he said. "See you on the other side Wayne."

Static had had issues with drugs in the past. In an interview with Gotham-News in 2012 the singer admitted of having been a "serious drug addict for many years," although he's already drug-free anymore, adding, "I have some drinks at night but that's it."

Staind rocker Aaron Lewis wrote: "My heart goes out to Wayne's family."

Disturbed vocalist David Draiman meanwhile said: "Goodbye old friend."
