Brittany Maynard Ends Her Life; Folks Bid Adieu on Social Media

Brittany Maynard, the cancer-stricken patient who announced in October her decision to end her life rather than suffering the debilitating effects of the ailment, has finally died Saturday in Portland, Oregon.

Maynard was 29.

Maynard bid adieu in a post on Facebook.

"Goodbye to all my dear friends and family that I love. Today is the day I have chosen to pass away with dignity in the face of my terminal illness, this terrible brain cancer that has taken so much from me ... but would have taken so much more," she wrote on Facebook.

"The world is a beautiful place, travel has been my greatest teacher, my close friends and folks are the greatest givers. I even have a ring of support around my bed as I type ... Goodbye world. Spread good energy. Pay it forward!"

In an interview with Facebook, Maynard divulged that she was suffering from glioblastoma and she feared that her condition would only be out of her control.

"I've discussed with many experts how I would die from it and it's a terrible, terrible way to die. So being able to choose to go with dignity is less terrifying," she said in an interview with People.

On Oct. 6, Maynard was featured in a Compassion & Choices video, group that supports end-of-life choice, in a campaign to expand death with dignity laws throughout the U.S.

Maynard, together with her family, decided to move to Oregon after knowing of her terminal illness so she could benefit the state's physician-assisted suicide law.

Maynard's courage eventually made her Compassion & Choices' face. Doctors told Maynard that she has only six months to leave.

Maynard's decision went without criticism. Others slammed her for opting "suicide."

However, Maynard defended herself, saying "It's not suicide," "It's meant to relieve the suffering."

Rest in peace, Brittany Maynard.
