Bill Paxton and Rene Russo join Gyllenhaal in the film. Released by Open Films, critics praised Nightcrawler. 94 percent of 140 the reviewers in Rotten Tomato gave it 'fresh' rating.

One reason why the box-office didn't fare well was Halloween's fall on a Friday. Box office receipts were actually 40 percent lower compared to last year's, revealed Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Rentrak.

The good thing is market rebounded Saturday and Sunday.

Last week's box-office champ, Ouija dropped to no. 2, although it was a razor-thin defeat. Nightcrawler actually outside the horror flick by a mere $8,760 fewer, Rentrak revealed.

Ouija, released by Universal, centers on the board game believed by many as a medium to contact the dead.

It is believed that Ouija and Nightcrawler could trade places this week.

World War Two war film, Fury, starring Brad Pitt, is steady at third place, earning $9.1 million for the three days from Friday through Sunday in the United States and Canada.

Shia LaBeouf and Michael Pena join Pitt in the cast. The film has already grossed $60million both in US and Canada theatres in the United States and Canada.

Ben Affleck's thriller Gone Girl, which has been a box office leader for two weekends dropped to number 4, with $8.8 million in ticket sales. Accumulated gross already reached $136 million.
