Carnival Corporation (CCL) has announced a new wireless network called WiFi@Sea that will deliver high-speed Internet service starting Monday.

The new service generates Internet connectivity speeds up to 10 times faster than those cruise ship passengers normally receive.

CCL, the world's largest cruise company, is expected to expand the wireless network service globally to its entire 101-ship fleet on all nine of its brands.

A pilot program for the hybrid technology was begun a year and a half ago. Currently, around 10 ships use WiFi@Sea. These ships consist of eight Carnival Cruise Lines vessels, one Princess ship and one Holland America Line ship.

During this fourth quarter, CCL will launch WiFi@Sea to ships sailing the Caribbean. The service expansion will continue to Alaska in summer 2015, followed by the Mediterranean, Baltic, Western Europe and Asia in 2015 and 2016.

Global Chief Information Officer Ramon Millan of Carnival Corporation said the goal is to "give the passengers the best possible connection to the Internet when they are sailing in the middle of the ocean."

"We believe it will also help us attract new cruisers, especially millennials who have made connectivity and social media an everyday part of their lives," Millan added.

Pricing for the service will vary. The cost will be "determined by individual brand as service rolls out and is expected to be comparable to current prices," the company confirmed.

According to some reports, Doral-based Carnival's expected total investment for the hybrid network that combines satellite and land-based technologies is about US$10 million.
