Dmitri S. Peskov, a spokesperson for Russia President Vladimir V. Putin, told Russian media that the Kiev government ordered military planes to fire at civilian's villages.
He blamed the Kiev authorities for the collapse of the Geneva agreements which was negotiated last month by Russia, Ukraine, the US, and the European Union (EU), according to The New York Times (NYT).
Moscow warned that it would take necessary action to protect the pro-Russian residents of eastern Ukraine.
However, the Kiev regime did not show signs of movement across the border, the report explained.
In a statement, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs demanded that the Kiev regime and its Western supporters halt the military assault in the area immediately.
The foreign ministry also blamed the US and the EU for removing and crushing the hopes for a "peaceful settlement" of the problem through its support for Kiev, the report detailed.
The Defense Ministry in Kiev reported that two military helicopters were lost in the clash. It also said two people from the Ukrainian armed forces died in the assault, the report said.
According to some reports from Slovyanks, separatist officials said one militant died in the attacks.
The casualty was announced after Putin called for the retreat of Ukrainian forces from the said area, the report stated.
Based on a report by Reuters, Ukrainian authorities said one of its military helicopters was shot down, resulting in the death of an airman.
The second helicopter was then forced to land. A medic helicopter was also shot at, the report said.
Ukraine interim interior minister, Arsen Avakov, said in a Facebook post that the attack started at 4:30 am on Friday.
He also accused the militants of using the residents as human shields, and said the government was trying to avoid clashes in the residential areas, the report relayed.
Avakov's Facebook post urged the people to remain inside their homes and avoid standing beside windows, The NYT reported.
