Han, 39, got into an argument with the girl's mother over a parking space after the woman refused to move and let him in. He got out of his car, confronter her, then dragged the child from a baby carriage and threw the child to the ground.

The child died. Han told prosecutors various stories. He said he was drunk and didn't know what he was doing. Another story was that he mistook the carriage for a shopping cart. He also said he didn't a child was inside the carriage. Either way, he said the act was unintentional

Whatever Han's arguments, he was convicted of murder in late September. Prosecutors asked for the death penalty citing Han's committal of this crime less than a year after being released from prison on other charges.

Han unsuccessfully appealed the sentence. An associate, Li Ming, also was swept up in the case. He is serving five years in prison for driving Han away rom the crime scene.

The incident and trial sparked a firestorm inside China. The public seemed especially angered by Han's contention during the September trial at Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court that the killing was unintentional.

State-run Global Times said many people went online to express anger over Han's "shameless lying." Others said he had a right to defend himself before being sentenced.
