Baby talk plays a major role in helping babies learn to talk and moms do the talking more often than dads, according to a new study.

A team of U.S.-based researchers lead by Dr. Betty Vohr, professor of pediatrics at Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, conducted the study and tracked the verbal interactions between 33 late preterm and term infants and their parents by capturing 3,000 hours of recordings.

"There is little information about the language environment for infants beginning in the first days of life through 7 months of age and the relative contribution to language of the mother and father," Vohr said.

Researchers discovered mothers interact more with their infant daughters by 88 percent to 94 percent compared to their sons from birth until one month old.

On the other hand, fathers interacted more often with their infant boys than infant girls.

The new study also suggests both male and female babies respond better to female voices compared to male voices.

The tentative explanation behind the result may be attributed to the women's frequent way of talking to the babies, which is "baby talk" and they make more eye contact while talking to the babies.

Men who had baby boy tended to talk slightly more often than men who had baby girls, according to the report. Vohr said, however, there wasn't enough data on this point to make conclusion.

Vohr and other researchers made clear to parents about the significance of talking to their infants as early as possible.

It's considered the most cost-effective way a family can enhance the language skills of the children, according to Vohr.
