She said that now that everybody knows who she is, she has felt a certain responsibility to always appear put together. She says that fame has been rather challenging, saying "It's good for your soul to walk around unnoticed; there's so much you can't do when everybody knows who you are. And so I miss those little things."

Nyong'o said that one of the people who has helped her come into her own after winning an Academy Award was Oprah Winfrey.

The star shared that Winfrey isn't just role model to her, but rather a reference point. She likens the talk show host to a dictionary and Bible, which you refer to as to how to live or speak.

Aside from being noticed for her acting prowess, Nyong'o has also been noted for her non-standard beauty and dark skin.

She said that prior to her gaining fame, dark skin was deemed as "unacceptable." She said that even though her family didn't think that way, the public perception was more overwhelming than what the people close to her were saying.

Her mother taught her that beauty isn't only achievable through "external features". She was taught that "beauty is an expression of love" and, that people who are friendly have as much advantages as physically beautiful people do, saying that the world is big enough to make room for "beauty to be diverse."
