Old Tree Moved to New Spot in University of Michigan

An old tree, which has been sitting in the Ann Arbor, Michigan, where the University of Michigan was established have been said to be transferred to a new spot on Monday.

According to reports, the workers were scheduled to move the 500-feet tree at a pedestrian walkway on Oct. 25 to 26. However, it was postponed to Monday as the inflatable air bladder that helped in holding the tree up ended up bursting.

The tree is said to be 250 years old. The workers were able to position the tree perfectly by Monday. It is now standing in front of the entrance of the Stephen M. Ross School of Business.

According to the officials, the tree was relocated to make way for the US$135-million donor-funded expansion of the University of Michigan, specifically the Ross School. The donor was also reportedly the one who covered the expenses involved in moving the tree, which amounted to US$400,000.

The oak tree was said to have been in the area from 1764 and it has been there 73 years before the University of Michigan moved from Detroit to Ann Arbor. It has also been sitting there 60 years before an official seal has been featured in the said oak tree.

According to city officials, history has been a huge factor in deciding the movement of the tree. They also expressed their gratitude over the funding given to secure the historical oak tree.

In a statement from Paul Cox, the vice president of Environmental Design Inc., a Texas-based company that has been moving big trees for decades, noted that the tree should be cared for and helped in adjusting in its new home. He added that the tree would have to undergo three to five years regarding a maintenance program.

He assured that the tree would survive saying, "We have about a 97 percent survival rate on big trees, so I would have every expectation that this would fall into that category."
