(Photo : Reuters) AT&T has announced they will support the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge in the U.S. for $950 off contract and $399 on a two-year contract.

Samsung's Galaxy Note Edge is another experiment like the Galaxy Round, designed to test customer reaction to a different style of device. The Galaxy Round had a curved display from left to right, but the Galaxy Note Edge has small curved edges on the device.

These curved edges offer settings menus and other smart buttons, normally found on another page in the application. Currently, only Samsung apps will support this new feature, but app developers are being pushed by Samsung to help out.

Having a wireless carrier in the U.S. support the device might perk more app developers' interest. AT&T has announced they will carry the smartphone in the U.S. for $950 off contract or $399 on a two-year deal.

AT&T's usual contracts range from $99 to $299, depending on the capabilities of the device and manufacturer. To have the Galaxy Note Edge at $399 is considered odd, but it might point to Samsung investing heavily in R&D and not being able to manufacture the Galaxy Note Edge cheaply.

Still, most phones cost under $300 to manufacture - the iPhone 6 costs $210, the Galaxy S5 costs $220 and even the Moto X costs under $250. Even if Samsung's new screen costs a few extra dollars to develop, it still means the company is getting over $500 in profit for every off contract sale and even more in the long-term with two year contracts.

If any carrier has been willing to carry smartphones that offer a niche functionality, it is AT&T. They have provided carrier services for the Fire Phone, Facebook Phone and LG G Flex, all considered weird or failure devices.

The Galaxy Note Edge might not be the next iPhone, but Samsung is betting big on the idea of a curved display.
