Republicans need only three more seats to clinch Senate majority after GOP candidates Mike Rounds of South Dakota, Tom Cotton of Arkansas, and Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia seized posts previously held by Democrats, CNN projected.

Cotton was able to grab a Senate seat away from Democrat Mark Pryor, while Capito picked up a seat that has been held by Democrats for almost three decades. U.S. President Barack Obama, who is slated to deliver a public speech on Wednesday, now faces the possibility of having a Republican-ruled opposition in his administration, the report predicted.

Earlier, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell was able to dispatch Democratic rival Alison Lundergan Grimes in his bid to be re-elected. McConnell's victory served as a bad omen for the Democrats.

In  Florida, the gubernatorial race continues to heat up as a judge denied Democrat Charlie Crist's request to give Broward Country a two-hour voting extension in light of some system breakdowns. Crist is aiming to dethrone Republican Governor Rick Scott in the midterms, the report stated.

The tension in Georgia is also rising as exit polls reflect that the Senate race between GOP candidate David Perdue and Democratic opponent Michelle Nunn is a tight one. In Virginia, Democrat Sen. Mark Warner is finding himself in a difficult position as Republican rival Ed Gillispie is unexpectedly gaining more traction.

Exit polls in North Carolina show Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan gaining a thin lead over GOP rival Thom Tillis. Should Hagan win in this race, Democrats would gain more support for their upcoming big challenge in the 2016 elections, said the report.

Exit surveys on Tuesday showed six out of ten voters are not satisfied with the president's performance. However, roughly the same number expressed similar feelings towards Republicans' performance in congress. Additionally, majority of the voters conveyed unfavourable opinions on both the GOP and the Democrats.

Based on the exit polls, the fiercest Senate battles are happening in Georgia and North Carolina, the report relayed.

The final party ruling the Senate is yet to be determined until Wednesday morning. For now, all eyes are focused on the seats that the GOP needs to win to gain control of the Senate.
