Google will soon release an update to its Google Drive app, which will no longer have an editing feature for sheets or documents.
Google will be removing the document editing feature from its Google Drive app. After the update, users will be required to download a standalone app called Docs and Sheets to be able to edit documents; otherwise the latter will only be view-only files, according to Techsonia.

Users who attempt to make any edits in their spreadsheets or documents will receive a prompt for the download of the new standalone editing app Docs and Sheets, the report explained.
A report said the separation of Google's cloud storage from its editing features was designed to streamline the usage for each new app. The effort is also a way for Google to prompt its users to get only the mobile apps that they need, the report detailed.
User experience for the new Docs and Sheets app is almost the same as the previous version, the report added.
As of the release of this announcement, Google has only released an editing app for spreadsheets and documents. The company also plans to release standalone app for presentations, the report stated.
The schedule for the release of the new Google Drive update is yet to be announced, Techsonia reported.
Techworld cited Google product manager Brian Levee explaining in a blog post that the new changes are designed to provide their clients with an easier and quicker way to create, find, and edit spreadsheets, documents, and presentations while they are mobile.
Another reason for the update might be Microsoft Office's release of native apps for the iPad. Previously, Microsoft had separate mobile apps for its OneDrive cloud services. By creating standalone apps for Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, Microsoft has increased its visibility on mobile devices, the report speculated.
As for the desktop version of the apps, Google currently has no plans to make the same updates it made in its mobile Drive version, Techworld reported.
