St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina won his seventh straight Golden Glove.

In winning another Golden Glove award, Molina becomes only the third catcher to win at least seven in a row. Ivan Rodriguez and Johnny Bench - previous winners of the award and catchers as well - have each won 10.

For the second straight year, Baltimore Oriolers and the Kansas City Royals have led Major League Baseball (MLB) teams with three Gold Gloves.

All the winners of the award from the Royals have won before and were just repeat winners. The players include catcher Salvador Perez, first baseman Eric Hosmer, left fielder Alex Gordon, and Molina.

"We've said from day one, if you can't play defense, there's probably not a spot for you in our everyday lineup," Royals general manager Dayton Moore said.

The award triggered an escalation in some player's contracts, like Perez for example. It triggered the rising of the Royals' options from US $3.75 million to $3,825,000 million in 2017, $5 million to $5.15 million in 2018, and $6 million to $6.3 million in 2019.

Molina had only played for 110 games, his fewest since 2004. This unimpressive number of games is due to injury. However, he still led the NL catchers by throwing out 47 percent of supposed base-stealers.

He ties Bob Boone for the third-most Golden Glove awards for a catcher.

Gonzalez and Pedroia each earned a $100,000 bonus for winning and Hardy, Jones and Markakis will get $75,000 each. Gordon, Molina and Perez made $50,000 apiece and Simmons and Heyward earned $25,000 each.

Other Golden Glove winners include Houston Astros pitcher Dallas Keuchel. He led the majors in Runs Saved with 10. This is his first Golden Glove.

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke, first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, and Colorado Rockies second and third baseman D.J. LeMahieu and Nolan Arenado also earned Golden Glove awards.
