Democrats Point To Benghazi Panel As Republicans' Attempt to Manipulate 2016 Presidential Elections

Republicans are calling for a select committee hearing in order to address the Benghazi case, but Democrats such as Rep. Adam Schiff of California are looking to boycott the proceedings in order to avoid giving it credibility.

Rep. Trey Gowdy, a South Carolina Republican, is set to head the House select committee on Benghazi, and encouraged Democrats like Schiff to allow the hearing to happen before judging it as non-credible.

However, Democrats are reluctant to lend support to the committee as many see it as an attempt by the Republican Party to discredit the opposition and affect the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.

Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., stated that he won't serve on the committee if asked because its only purpose will be to hurt Hillary Clinton's chances of presidential election.

The Benghazi incident occurred on September 11, 2012 in Libya where an American diplomatic mission was attacked, resulting in the deaths of U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.

The Benghazi event has since been a divisive issue as it was initially blamed on an anti-Muslim video on Youtube.

The event and its aftermath figured heavily in the 2012 presidential election as well, and several investigations were launched to determine the roles of the CIA and the Obama administration in the incident.

Republicans claimed that the Obama administration did little to prevent the attack and also had in-depth information which was kept from the American people for fear that it would tarnish Obama's reputation and chances at re-election.

Democrats are still hesitant to participate in the upcoming Benghazi committee hearing but have not yet released a collective statement detailing whether or not the party as a whole plans on boycotting the panel.
