The National Disaster Warning Centre said aftershocks were still recorded as of this posting, with the magnitudes ranging from below 3.0 to 5.2 on the Richter scale.

Thailand's earthquake authorities said the quake had a magnitude of 6.3 but the US Geological Survey said it the magnitude was 6.0.

The Thailand government also said it will provide assistance to those whose lives have been affected by the latest earthquake.

The earthquake in Thailand occurred about 12 hours after a 6.0-magnitude quake rocked Japan's capital city of Tokyo. At least 17 people were injured in the Tokyo quake, authorities said.

Japan and Thailand as well as the Philippines are sitting on what is considered as the Pacific ring of fire, where earthquake is registered almost every single day. In the Philippines, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake killed over a hundred persons in the provinces of Bohol and Cebu in Central Visayas and destroyed historical and religious sites that were several centuries old.
