Twitter and Advocacy Group Team-Up to Fight Online Harassment of Women

Twitter launched a new tool that accepts reports of abuse filed by users and that will also stand up to the harassment of women online.

The microblogging site teamed up with non-profit organization Women, Action and the Media or WAM to help users report abuse and harassment over Twitter and have the issue resolved within 24 hours.

WAM aims to assist women victims of online harassment. The group became more active after the Gamergate controversy that sparked widespread public outcry over online misogyny.

The non-profit organization will monitor incoming reports and notify Twitter. They will also track Twitter's response to the reports. WAM's goal is to give Twitter a better understanding of what's happening on its site to improve the company's policies regarding harassment.

"We're not Twitter, and we can't make decisions for them, we're going to do our best to advocate for you with them, though," said WAM on their website.

This move came after Twitter CEO Dick Costolo received a lot of questions about harassment happening on the microblogging site during an earnings call question-and-answer session this summer.

Twitter is also working on policies after its members complained about harassment.

After outrage over rape threats received by a female journalist in the United Kingdom, Twitter simplified its reporting process for abusive tweets in July 2013.

In August of the same year, Twitter updated its rules for users and added more staff to scan flagged tweets. This was a response to bomb threats and rape threats posted on Twitter.

Netizens and non-profit organizations are hoping the Twitter and WAM initiatives will go a long way in protecting women from online harassment.
