Pheasant Hunting Season in California Officially Starts

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) will allow the hunting of pheasants at northern California Type A wildlife areas from November 8 until December 21.

Type A wildlife areas in the Sacramento Valley are Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge, Delevan National Wildlife Refuge, Colusa National Wildlife Refuge, Gray Lodge Wildlife Area, Upper Butte Basin Wildlife Area's Little Dry Creek and Howard Slough Units and Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area.

These areas are open for pheasant hunting on weekends and Wednesdays. Only the first Monday (November 10) will be included, as well.

Grizzly Island Wildlife Area is also open during weekends and on Wednesdays, including the second Monday (November 17).

The Llano Seco Unit of the Upper Butte Basin Wildlife Area will be closed for waterfowl hunting because of drought, but will open on the same days as well.

Pheasant hunters can obtain their permits of entry from the check station via the morning lottery that begins at 4 a.m. The draw takes place at 4:30 a.m. The entry will also be available on a first-come, first-served lists at the check station.

San Joaquin Valley Type A wildlife areas are Los Banos Wildlife Area, Mendota Wildlife Area, North Grasslands Wildlife Area, Volta Wildlife Area and San Luis National Wildlife Refuge.

The areas will be open only on Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays during the pheasant season.

Meanwhile, the Wister Unit of the Imperial Wildlife Area in Imperial County and San Jacinto Wildlife Area in Riverside County will not participate in the pheasant hunting season.

Changing the shoot days on Type A wildlife areas is pursuant to the California Code of Regulations, Title 14, subsections 550(i)(1).
