The Wrap reported that the 42-year-old is 'circling' to play The Joker in the upcoming film "Suicide Squad."
Leto won an Oscar and Golden Globe for his performance in "Dallas Buyers Club."
Directed by David Ayers, "Suicide Squad" will reportedly be seeing the award-winning actor performing Joker as a follow up to his acting career.
The new project is created by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru. The film is set to feature the Suicide Squad team, better yet known as Task Force X. The group is composed of convicted supervillains who are offered the chance to redeem themselves through extremely dangerous missions, according to ANI.
"Suicide Squad" has been recently announced as the first DC Comics and Warner Bros. co-venture which is to follow Zach Snyder's "Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn Of Justice."
Actors Tom Hardy, Will Smith and Margot Robbie are also in a variety of stages of discussions, according to The Wrap. They may be playing major roles in the film which is based on a popular comic book series.
Also the singer of "Thirty Seconds to Mars," Leto has been busy with his music. However, with this new project, he reportedly had no problem juggling music and film, saying he was "excited" about the progress of things.
Leto did say he was looking forward to doing films in 2015. However, he revealed that he couldn't reveal the project just yet. He added that there would be "something to talk about soon."
There is no official confirmation yet from either Leto or the film's producers, however if Jared does get the part, he will be following the familiar footsteps of the late Heath Ledger, Jack Nicholson and Cesar Romero. They all starred as the legendary villain in Gotham City, in film and on television.
Meanwhile, Ledger won an Oscar for playing Batman's crazed arch nemesis on "The Dark Knight."
It was also rumoured that Leto have been in contention for Marvel's Doctor Strange, but that role has allegedly been given to Benedict Cumberbatch, reports Mail Online.
"Suicide Squad" is already in the works and is set for release August 2016.
