Sophia Loren Explains Photographed Side-Eye Glance At Jayne Mansfield

Even in the 1950's, women could get catty.

One of the most iconic celebrity shade-throwing was a black-and-white photograph of sex siren Sophia Loren giving the voluptuous and scantily-dressed Jayne Mansfield the side-eye during an A-list party in 1957.

The photo was taken at a Beverly Hills party thrown for Loren to welcome her to Hollywood. During that year, Loren starred in one of her very first Hollywood films, "The Pride and the Passion".

Fifty seven years after the said event, Loren explains what was going through her mind when the picture was taken.

Mansfield, who had just turned 24 at that time, arrived at the party with platinum blonde curls and, a very low cut dress that revealed some serious cleavage.

In her recently released memoir "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow: My Life," Loren shared that Mansfield went directly to her table and, being who she was and being dressed the way she did, Loren stated that the actress knew that all eyes were on her.

Loren stated that it seemed like Mansfield was "not completely sober" and referred to her neckline as "more than generous".

"It was as if she were saying: "Here comes Jayne Mansfield. The Blond Bombshell!" She sat next to me at the table and started talking -- it was like a volcano erupting. As she got more and more worked up, suddenly I found one of her breasts on my plate. I looked up at her, terrified ... One especially quick reporter took a picture of the scene, and the image went around the world."

She said whenever someone would ask her to autograph the photo, she would refuse. Loren stated that she refused to be part of all the drama that surrounded Hollywood.

Coming November 12, Loren will be honored by the American Film Institute at the AFI Fest to be held in Hollywood.
