Walking Dead's self-help episode that aired Sunday night raked in 13.53 million US viewers. It was an emotionally charged episode and Entertainment Weekly had the opportunity to interview the man playing Sgt. Abraham Ford's character, Michael Cudlitz, to fill us in on those flashbacks.

As a man who lost his purpose in life, ready to commit suicide, Michael says this was the episode where the soldier shows what defines him as a human being.

A series of flashbacks is set right after the apocalypse began. Michael's character kills several men who have assaulted his family but then ended up frightening his wife and kids. Michael explains that Ellen, Abraham's wife, and his children don't know who to be more afraid of. And in a state of uncertainty, they left only to be eaten by walkers.

Michael also says that this scene is different from the comic version where his daughter comes back as the living dead and he winds up having to shoot her in the face. In the episode, the whole family ended up being devoured by walkers.

Being a soldier who is committed to serve, Michael explained that the appearance of a screaming Eugene approaching fast and being chased by three walkers gave Abraham temporary purpose. Abraham just wanted to do what his DNA was wired to do, rescue Eugene and get back to taking his own life. But then Eugene says "I have a very important mission" which gave Abraham something to hold onto.

These flashbacks came after Eugene's present confession that the entire mission was a lie, admitting that he was not actually a scientist nor does he know the cure to the zombie virus. Abraham, enraged, severely beats Eugene, bringing him back to his lowest point again with no purpose in life.
