The 33-year-old actor has been previously seen in such big-name flicks like Inception, Lincoln, and The Dark Knight Rises.
Oscar-winning director Stone, whose most popular films include Midnight Express, Platoon and Born on the Fourth of July, helmed the movie's screenplay.
Filming is schedule to start January, Reuters revealed.
The screenplay was adapted on two books about Snowden: The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World's Most Wanted Man penned by Guardian journalist Luke Harding and Time of the Octopus, Anatoly Kucherena's novel.
Snowden has been the subject of a handful of film's and Stone's isn't the only one that details his life.
Also in the works is the movie adaptation of the fictional work No Place to Hide by journalist Glenn Greenwald, who also used to write for The Guardian.
James Bond producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli will back the movie.
In October, Laura Poitras, the documentary film director contacted by Snowden in 2013, also made the film about the whistleblower.
The documentary, Citizenfour, has been widely hailed by critics.
Edward Snowden came into international fame in the most unusual way: leaked confidential National Security files to the media, thus, exposing the U.S. government's mass surveillance program and data collection efforts.
After the whistle-blowing incident, Snowden moved to Russia, where he spent five weeks in Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport. He is now living in an undisclosed location in Russia.
