Born in Oldham, Clarke's other starring roles on TV include the BBC series Down To Earth, which tells the story of a family who packed their bags and traded their city life for race to relocate to rural Devon.

"He will be greatly missed by his family and loved ones. At this time we ask that you respect their privacy in their time of grief," said his talent agent, Independent Talent Group, in a statement.

Clarke's nascent years as an actor was highlighted by his roles as two characters in Coronation Street in the late 1960s.

He eventually established his name in the movies, as one of the brutal droogs who loved "ultraviolence" in A Clockwork Orange.

His last role was as Charles Poldark in the BBC revival of the 1970s TV drama Poldark.

But his most unforgettable performance would be his portrayal of the sleuth Andy Dalziel - partner of Colin Buchanan - TV version of Reginald Hill's tales about colleagues Dalziel and Pascoe.

The series ran on TV for 12 years, from 1996 until 2007.

He also lent his presence in Midsomer Murders and also appeared on stage to play Winston Churchill in Three Days In May.

Asked to sum up his career once in an interview, Clarke said: "I got lucky with some of the things I did and happened to make bigger money. But I've never gone into anything thinking 'oh, I'm going to make a fortune here'.

Why he didn't accept Hollywood offers, Clarke explained that he thought the script and the character being offered were stuffs "I didn't want to be involved with."
