China's armed forces unveiled its new J-31 stealth fighter plane at the Zhuhai Air Show just in time for President Barack Obama's visit to the Asia-Pacific summit.
ABC News said China's President Xi Jinping is focused on building-up the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and the country's defense companies.

Chinese sources claim that with the J-31, China now has an edge against rival Asian claimants to the East and South China Seas. ABC News reported the aircraft is crucial in China's effort to handle defense operations beyond its shores.
J-31 developer Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) opted to remain silent on the question of possible aircraft orders, but said its fighter is competitive with U.S. hardware. AVIC said countries not having access to U.S. exports of weaponry might be interested in the J-31. AVIC spokesman Fu Mingyao said they were given firm instructions not to promote the aircraft, however.
CNN reported that China might spring real military surprises at the Zhuhai Air Show. The show is one of the most awaited events in China, which tends to be secretive about matters concerning defense initiatives and weapons.
Some observers believe China's arms are nearly at par with that of the U.S. and European nations, yet questions remain about the PLA's readiness to meet the challenge of modern warfare.
