Twitter Roles Out Improvements to Help Protect Account, Restore Access

In order to help users protect their accounts and easily restore access following a forgotten password, social networking giant Twitter said it has unveiled new security measures that will make it tougher for hackers to gain access into an account.

Acknowledging that several accounts have been compromised, Twitter said forgotten passwords will be reset using the tweeter's phone number or email address, making it easier to regain access to the account and making it harder for hackers.

Experts said hackers mostly gain access into Twitter accounts by making a new password request after claiming to be the real users who have forgotten their passwords.

By linking the new system that will change passwords to a user's email address or phone number, Twitter said hackers will not be able to get access to an account, unless the hacker also has access to the user's email address and phone.

It will now be easier to regain access when passwords are forgotten, said Twitter product manager Mollie Vandor. It will now be a less frustrating experience for users to reset their passwords.

The new security measures aim to enable users to get back into their accounts quickly and securely, Vandor said in a Twitter post.

The new measures, Vandor said, streamline password reset experience and enable Twitter to identify and block suspicious logins.

Aside from linking the password reset request to email address and phone numbers, Twitter will now use a system that will analyze the location of the user accessing the account and the device the user is using.

Twitter will then compare the location and the device against the history of the user to check for suspicious or irregular behaviour. If the system notices unusual behaviour, it will ask the person trying to gain access to the account for more information.

Twitter believes that the new security measures will prevent incidents of hacking in the future.
