A rare set of mono mono twins were delivered by Sarah Thistlethwaite on May 10, 2014 in Akron, Ohio.

The mono mono twins were born holding each other’s hands to mother Sarah Thistlethwaite through caesarean section.

Monoamniotic twins, otherwise known as mono mono twins, are very rare and happen 1 in 10,000 pregnancies. The condition occurs when two identical twins share the same amniotic sac in the uterus of their mother.

Aside from sharing the same amniotic sac, mono mono twins also share the same placenta but have separate umbilical cords. Close monitoring of mono mono twin pregnancies is done as umbilical cord strangulation in the womb may occur.

Monoamniotic twins have a survival rate of 81 to 95 percent with close monitoring. However, if aggressive fetal monitoring is not administered, the chances of survival for the babies could drop to 50 percent.

The twins were born to parents Sarah and Bill and would join their older brother Jaxon who is 15 months old.

The News Net 5 in Ohio reported that Sarah’s rare pregnancy was discovered on the 19th week.

Sarah said in an interview with News Net 5 that she and husband Bill were so excited to have the twins. However, she also revealed that she had to stay eight or nine weeks in the hospital prior to giving birth as the condition needed to be monitored.

She added that although the situation was quite difficult, her family knew that in the end she would have healthy twin girls.

Sarah delivered the rare mono mono twins at 2:41 PM on her 58th day of stay in the hospital. She stayed in the hospital for two months and gave birth just in time for Mother’s Day.
