Mother’s Day is annually celebrated every second Sunday of May. Last year, Google created an interactive doodle shown in 52 countries where users can create 27 different cards for their mothers.

Users who clicked on the doodle would be taken to a search result page showing different posts for Mother’s Day celebration.

The origin of the celebration for mothers can be traced back to the time of the ancient Romans and Greeks. However, the roots of the history of the festival can be linked to Mothering Sunday, a festival in the United Kingdom, which was long before celebrated before it hit the United States.

The United States recognizes Anna Jarvis as the founder of Mother’s Day. The celebration happened first in 1908 when Jarvis asked her mother’s church in the US to hold a memorial in remembrance of her 20 years of teaching Sunday School. From then on, Anna Jarvis began campaigning for Mother’s Day to be a recognized holiday in the United States.

Her tireless efforts reaped its fruits when in 1914, US legislators officially made Mother’s Day a recognized holiday. US President Woodrow Wilson signed the law making the celebration official. However, Jarvis was said to have been disappointed with the commercialization of the event.

Mother’s Day was also adopted in other countries around the world including India, Denmark, Italy, Australia, Turkey, Finland, Mexico, Japan, Belgium, China and Canada.
