Media reports said the Chinese production company, Meng Jiang Wei Film, has bought the publication rights of the drama's film version that it will release in China. SBS (Seoul Broadcasting system), the show's producer, is currently making final copyright contracts with Meng Jiang Wei Film to finalize the release and confirm a specific date for the movie's screening.
The film will be edited to turn the 21-episode drama series into a two-hour feature length movie. Major parts of the megahit fantasy romance, plus some unreleased scenes, will be included in the film version.
My Love from the Star tells the love story between a self-centered but lovable actress named Chun Song Yi, portrayed by the gorgeous Jeon Ji Hyun, and a handsome alien named Do Min Joon, played by actor Kim Soo Hyun.
In the series, Soo Hyun is an alien who came to earth 400 years ago and who now works as a university professor. He falls in love with Ji Hyun and the story revolves around their fantasy romance.
The TV series has been a massive hit in Asia, especially in China since its release there last February. It made Soo Hyun and Ji Hyun instant megastars in China.
It also made "chimaek," the Korean term for fried chicken and beer, the latest foodie craze in China. In the TV series, chimaek is Ji Hyun's favorite snack.
Sina's Weibo microblogging platform reported that 3.7 million posts related to the Mandarin term for chimaek have appeared since the dish was popularized by the TV show.
The program has also been good for South Korea's economy. The Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation said sales of Korean agricultural products in China have sharply risen because of the popularity of the show.
Sales of Korean instant noodles have jumped by 60 percent while there has been a 30 percent rise in sales at fried chicken restaurants in China.
In China, almost everything Ji Hyun and Soo Hyun wore, ate or read in the fantasy drama have become best selling items.
My Love from the Star is credited with reigniting the Korean Wave across East Asia, especially in China and in Chinese-speaking regions. It aired on SBS in Korea from December 18, 2013 to February 27, 2014 on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
