Harvard officials and Catholics in the Boston area were angered by an independent group's plans to hold a Black Mass honoring Satan on Monday evening, which was cancelled after negotiations broke down.
The Catholic Archdiocese of Boston together with Harvard's president and chaplain called the ceremony of the Harvard Extension Cultural Studies Club insensitive and offensive. The black mass ceremony was expected to parody the traditional Christian ritual of communion.

Harvard's president Drew Faust said the event was "deeply regrettable" considering that the organizers of the event were aware of the offense they have caused others.
Later in the day, the planned satanic black mass was cancelled after widespread condemnation from educational and religious leaders. Negotiations broke down between the group and the bar where the mass will take place.
The club was unable to find an alternative location to hold the ceremony.
However, the group said that the New York-based Satanic Temple, which co-organized the event, will still continue with the ceremony in an undisclosed and private location.
They said pushing through with the black mass will "reaffirm their respect for the Satanic faith" and put to shame those who condemned them.
Traditionally, satanic cults parody Catholic Church ceremonies. Terry Donilon, spokesperson of the Boston Archdiocese, said that the cancelled event was in fact a blatant "attack on the Eucharist."
"The act is offensive to Catholics and people of good will," Donilon said in a FoxNews.com interview.
The archdiocese also released a statement saying the cancelled activity "separates people from God and the human community." The statement pointed out that satanic worship runs contrary to charity and goodness by highlighting the destructive works of evil.
Even Robert Neugeboren, Dean of students and alumni affairs at Harvard Extension, described the cancelled activity as "deeply disturbing."
Later during the day, Nuegeboren issued a statement saying that although Harvard Extension supports all students to explore difficult issues, sensitivity to others is also highly encouraged.
